BACKGROUND

The idea for the Schuylkill Watershed Priority Lands Strategy grew out of initial meetings of the Schuylkill Action Network (SAN) Land Protection Collaborative in 2004 and 2005.  The SAN Land Protection Collaborative is a branch of the SAN that focuses on preserving highly valuable land in the Schuylkill watershed.  The core partners in the Prioritization Strategy are Natural Lands Trust (NLT), Philadelphia Water Department (PWD) and the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission, who together received a Growing Greener grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PADEP) in the fall of 2005.  Work on the project commenced in the winter of 2006, and the GIS modeling was completed in the spring of 2007.  Since then, the team has reached out and presented the model and its uses to counties, municipalities, and environmental non-profits, and at various conferences.  Throughout the modeling and outreach effort, the core partners have consulted with the SAN Land Protection Collaborative, made up of county, land trust, EPA, PADEP, watershed associations and other non-profit representatives.
